Engagement ring trends

By Taylah Burrows 17 February 2017

Over the years engagement ring trends have evolved and the current trend right now is for halo-style ring.

Blizzards Fine Jewellers owner Craig Blizzard said this classy style features a single diamond, bordered by smaller diamonds.

Halo-rings are a modern take on the cluster ring, but are more refined, he said.

While trends come and go, Mr Blizzard said solitaire rings were still the most popular choice for engagement rings.

“It always is strong, it always has been popular and probably always will be,” he said.

Cushion cut diamonds, which take the shape of a soft-cornered square, have soared in popularity as the diamond cut of choice.

“Still round is the most popular, but in the last 10 years cushion has jumped” Mr Blizzard said.

While diamonds are forever when it comes to engagement rings, the bands often change.

White gold and platinum are the most popular choice for bands at the moment, followed by yellow gold and rose gold.

Mr Blizzard said in the past, as the price of gold soared, women began to buy silver jewellery.

This trend then translated into groom’s purchasing platinum and white gold engagement rings.

Some male customers come into the store and are ready to propose, but do not know their bride-to-be’s taste in engagement rings.

Mr Blizzard said a proposal ring (which is inscribed with the words “will you marry me?”) or a proposal diamond (which will be used on the final ring design) make for perfect ring replacements during a proposal.

“A lot of blokes come in now and they are not real sure, or they have done some homework or had some hints,” he said.

“Buy a diamond then bring the girl in to design the ring.”
